IX Engineer Command

Does anyone have any idea where I might get a picture of the 830th EAB? Any help would be appreciated. My Dad served with 830th.

Hello Wilford. I have never seen a picture of the full 830th EAB and usually you only see company level photos. A full battalion is over 1000 people so it would hard to pick individuals out of a battalion picture.

The 830th EAB didn't publish a "yearbook" at the end of the war as did many other units but Merck Hancock, a member of the 830th EAB, did publish a memoir and unit history in 1973. I looked through my copy and did not see any photo captioned with the name "Wilford Case." This name doesn't show up in his list of known members either so he either missed your father in his list, I have your father's name wrong or he was in another unit. Are you sure of his unit affiliation?

Do you have a copy of your father's DD-214? This would list his unit at discharge.

David I do have my Dad's Discharge and it list his Unit as Company C 830th EAB.... Is it possible the clerk at that time typed in the incorrect info?

I'm sure it's possible but I'd think pretty unlikely. I'm sure your dad would have caught it.

I just found a picture my dad had from the 830. It is probably a picture of his company, looks like about 100 men. I also found a map just like the one posted on the home page of this site. Do you have any information on the map and how it was made? It looks like it may have been an etching or engraving.

Yes, a photo with around 100 men would have been a company photo.

I don't know specifically about the map but the EAB units had many draftsmen and artists. Lots of amazing things were produced both officially and unofficially.
